Do not buy a spraying platform on the assumption that a future Irish market, derogation, product authorisation or service workload will appear. Aviation compliance and permission to apply a plant protection product are separate gates. Start with a presently supportable mapping or monitoring job and verify the exact operation with the IAA and, where PPPs are involved, DAFM/PRCD.
The best agri drone for an Irish farm depends on the first job it must do. For most buyers in 2026, that means reliable drone mapping, crop monitoring and survey evidence before any spraying plan. Start with the legal, repeatable data jobs first, then judge whether a heavier spraying platform is justified.
Write the Requirements Brief First
A drone is one part of a capture-and-decision system. Before requesting a quote, describe the farm problem in terms a supplier, operator and adviser can test.
- Output: RGB inspection images, an orthomosaic, a surface/elevation model, multispectral index map, repeat monitoring record or another defined deliverable.
- Decision: who will use the output and what decision it may support. A map for a first drainage conversation is different from an engineering design or legal boundary task.
- Coverage: field area, terrain, obstacles, livestock, buildings, roads, neighbouring property and likely uninvolved people.
- Evidence quality: coordinate system, ground sampling distance, control/check points, expected accuracy, validation report and acceptable gaps.
- Repeatability: whether the same route, sensor settings, calibration and timing must be repeated to compare dates.
- Data route: file formats, cloud processing, ownership, retention, export, deletion and access for advisers or contractors.

Classify the Operation, Not the Brand
EASA rules use the risk of the operation rather than whether it is commercial or agricultural. The Open category covers lower-risk operations within its limitations. Operations outside those limits can fall into the Specific category; EASA says this commonly includes beyond-visual-line-of-sight work and aircraft above 25 kg, and may require a declaration under a standard scenario or an operational authorisation.
The IAA says operators generally need registration when a drone is over 250 g or has a camera or sensor capable of detecting personal data. The operator must also ensure the remote pilot holds the competency appropriate to the operation. Check the current IAA geographical-zone map and any applicable conditions for the location every time; the IAA issued an updated U04 geographical-zone notice on 22 July 2026.
Mapping and monitoring can be lawful uses, but a specific flight still has to comply with the relevant operation category, geographical-zone conditions, land/site permissions and data-protection obligations. βIt is only a farmβ is not an exemption.
Ask the Supplier to Prove the Workflow
Provider availability, parts lead times, prices and software terms change. Obtain dated written answers rather than relying on a comparison table:
- Which exact aircraft, class marking, firmware, remote-ID capability, payload and batteries are included?
- Which operation and payload is the quotation designed for, and what IAA category or authorisation assumption has been made?
- Who provides training, warranty handling, repair and parts in Ireland or the EU? Ask for the service location and current lead-time policy.
- Which software subscriptions, processing credits, mobile devices, calibration panels, GNSS equipment or control targets are additional?
- Can the system export standard files usable outside the vendor platform? Request sample deliverables before purchase.
- Who owns uploaded imagery and derived maps, where are they stored, and how are they deleted or transferred?
Run a Paid or Documented Acceptance Test
Test the proposed workflow on a representative field before buying at scale. Agree the flight area and output in advance. Check whether the operation can be conducted under the claimed regulatory route, then assess coverage gaps, image quality, georeferencing, processing time, repeatability and whether the adviser or contractor can actually use the files.
For crop monitoring, mark several contrasting zones and inspect them on the ground. Teagasc describes drone or satellite imagery as a way to highlight variation, while manual verification and other data help investigate the cause. Do not accept a sales demonstration that converts an index colour directly into a disease, nutrient or yield claim.
Record the full cost of the workflowβaircraft, sensors, batteries, charging, training, insurance, authorisation work, software, connectivity, calibration, GNSS/control, storage, maintenance and staff time. Do not publish a payback calculation until it is based on measured local use and verified costs.
